1). Coffee
We do it every morning- toss yesterday’s brew down the drain, and set the pot or kettle for today’s cup of coffee. But during these hot Summer days, I’ve been craving my coffee on the rocks preferably to hot coffee. Iced coffee can get watered down fast if you brew it hot, then pour it over the ice. My solution? Instead of pouring leftover coffee down the drain, pour it in an ice cube tray, freeze it, then use the coffee cubes instead of ice. Your iced coffee will never be the same!
2). Herbs.
I’m not sure about you, but I can’t save a basil plant if my life depended on it. I have tried for years to plant basil, or sustain a basil plant from the store and they always dry up and die. So rather than watch my basil and other herbs die a slow painful death, before they go bad, I chop them up and put the herbs in an ice cube tray with olive oil and freeze little herb cubes. When I’m are ready to cook with them, I simply pop as many as I need from the ice cube tray and put it in my cooking pan or skillet. Fresh herbs just taste 100x better than dried herbs. This technique has changed my life!
3). Bananas
The thing about bananas is they have such a small window of time where they are edible, and then *poof* they go off and they’re only good for banana bread. However, what’s great about bananas is when frozen they are wonderful in a fresh smoothie. All you need to do is peel them, cut them, place them in a a ziplock bag and freeze them. When you freeze a banana right before it turns completely brown, the great part about that is the banana is really sweet which eliminates the need for added sweeteners in your smoothie. Frozen bananas add a great taste and consistency to almost any smoothie or blended protein drink. Try it!
I hope these ideas have helped. Which one will you try? Do you have any foods that you freeze in lieu of tossing out? I’d love to know!
