I really needed a new desk. You might remember my post last year introducing you to my closet office, where I started doing some of my real estate work when I first got my license. While it certainly was a good start back then, there was no way an “office” like that would sustain my business for long. So back to the drawing board I went. After rearranging our bedroom, we found a layout that would fit a small desk between our closets. As luck would have it, we found a desk on Craigslist that was the perfect size and price with a lot of potential. And since our downstairs is currently a construction zone, I was able to do all the work inside the house.
This desk had a lot of little dings and holes in it, so the first thing I did was fill all the holes with wood filler. When the wood filler hardened, I sanded the rough patches down, and sanded the rest of the brown stain from the other areas of the desk. After that, I painted the first coat of paint on each surface, but the paint only highlighted all the remaining holes and dents on the desktop and drawer faces. (You couldn’t see them as much with the dark stain of the desk, but after a fresh coat of white paint, each little hole and dent stuck out.) So more wood filler went in. Then more sanding. Then more painting.
After the last coat of paint dried, I replaced the drawer hardware with some new drawer pulls I found at Home Depot. The top drawers have a clear pull, and the larger ones on the right side have a brushed nickel cap pull. I love the way they really pull it all together completely change the look of the desk.

It’s been a couple months since I’ve been using this new desk, and it’s working out well. It’s not ideal to have my desk in our room, but I keep reminding myself that this is only temporary. Once the downstairs is finished, I’ll have an entire room devoted to my office. (I can’t wait!)
