As we gear up and get ready for the holiday season, its important that we remember not to lose sight of our goals for next year. It’s so easy let the month of December, AKA “the holiday season” become a time where we check out and neglect our business. Keep in mind that in the real estate business, the activities you do today have a significant impact on you 60 days from now. If you wait until next year to write out your goals, then you’re already beginning the year behind. Don’t wait until January 1st to make your goals and set resolutions. Start today!!
But how?
Let me preface by saying that past Maggie was not a goal setter. I’ve made resolutions in the past, but measuring them was where I often fell short. It wasn’t until I became a business owner that I realized the importance of writing down my goals and finding someone to hold me accountable. Only then was I able to measure my success.
You’ve heard this said before but it’s true. When you write down your goals and look at them on a regular basis, you are more likely to achieve your desired outcome. If you share your goals with someone who will hold you accountable, then you are pretty much unstoppable. According to this Forbes article, “people who very vividly describe or picture their goals are anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish their goals than people who don’t.” The best way to vividly describe your goals? Write them down!
A year from now, you will wish you started today.
The first thing I suggest before you write down your goals, is to define your “Why“. This is more of your big picture vision. What is it that gets you up out of bed every day? Why do you own your business? Maybe for you, your why is a Who: children, parents or relatives.
My “Why” right now is my house. What drives me to the office every day is my goal to earn an income that will provide for the materials we need to finish our house. I can’t tell you how amazing it was when we ordered our kitchen cabinets. We were able to pay off that credit card right away from our savings because of my income. Once our house is done, I will start to focus on a new “Why“.
Once you know what your “Why” is, identify 3-4 pillars in your business will help you achieve that. The main pillars in my business are my: Blog, Social Media, Center of Influence (COI) and Networking Groups. For you, this could be a geographic area you consistently mail content to, a mom’s group, the Parent Teacher Association at your child’s school, or a rec sports league you belong to. You get the idea.
Now that you know what your pillars are, create action steps for each pillar to help you stay focused. Make sure that these action steps are specific and measurable. Using my Social Media Pillar as an example, one action step for me would be to post at least once a day on my feeds. In order to do that, I need to make sure I have all my links/images chosen, the captions typed up and the hashtags figured out. Ideally, I would set this up a weeks worth of posts in advance so all I would need to do is hit publish.
